unBlogged RIP

Saturday, December 19th, 2009

To all you fearless readers (and few responders), as of 2010 the blog thus known as unBlogged will cease to exist in the format you have grown to know over these last three years and three months. You see, I have been blessed with my first-ever grant from an Oregon-based non-profit arts agency (more on that later) and this will enable me to offer you an entire remakeover in the first quarter of the new year, the new decade. This will include a small break and please do pardon the reconstruction time. After the sawdust and sparks clear there will be a fresh new site and blog (not unlike a triple powder coated sporty top layer), but it will be a sleeker model. Consider this tjnorris.net V3 ( this is the second full facelift since ‘02). I am having the chassie overhauled to enable for a smoother ride for you and a more stable and interlocking sense of the road ahead for me. Stick around because things will sometimes ride along curves you’ve seen but once it hits 60 there’s no telling where we’ll go.

See The Grid Before It’s Erased

Friday, October 9th, 2009

After nearly two months The Grid is about to come down to make way for the holiday blues. See it at MP5³ before the lines fade into night. Closes 10/14.

SQFT Becomes Portable

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

This is the final week for SQFT in Portland (click above to see artists). The show, including 50 or so artists, closes this Saturday at the Fishbowl II/Blackfish Gallery (420 NW 9th Ave). After Portland the momentum continues as the show plans to pick up an additional half dozen artists prior to each site in which it lands. The next visit will be to the historical Egyptian Theater in downtown Boise, sponsored by Boise State University Visual Arts Center, opening in mid-November. I will keep you posted on further plans here.

SQFT Under Glass

Sunday, August 30th, 2009

SQFT is now snuggly hung and on view inside the Fishbowl Two of the Pearl District’s cooperative gallery, Blackfish. It was a mini feat to pull together so many wonderful artists and fit them all into one offbeat grid of sorts. I hope you enjoy it.

Too Hot To Blog

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

Admittedly, I’m a solar wuss. Granted between applying for scads of random administrative odd jobs, posing The Facebook Friend Challenge and otherness - I’ve been hard at work on both The Grid (for Milepost 5 in August) and SQFT (starting a lengthy tour at Blackfish Gallery’s Fishbowl in September), otherwise I’m sorta short, slowly single and sizzling. So.

To pass the hours I’m following shadows, finding area pools and drinking plenty H2O. If you didn’t notice, I also extended my bit on movies w/reporters (below), I’m still ready/willing/able to teach my class at Newspace (as long as I have enough students) and headed outta town for the Fourth to follow part of Maya Lin’s Confluence Project on the way to Long Beach.

CHUGGA: Oh, there’s a new curated cultural newsletter out called A Portland Conversation in Culture, and a new Artist’s Grant available called STOCK. And speaking of the coast - an exchange show between Portland/Astoria-based artists (July: 160 10th St, Astoria; August: 12×16 Gallery, Portland), and a leaner/meaner (good meaning, meaning good) David Eckard is back in town in a few weeks after many moons abroad!

Face Your Critics: Enroll Now

Monday, June 29th, 2009

FINAL ENROLLMENT DAYS: I’m slated to teach a second round of Deconstructing Criticism this Summer at Newspace Center for Photography. Last time out we had an incredible group of students. Some of the premise will remain unchanged, though the material will differ and the class will be more hands-on for photographers who are ready to meet their critics head-on. There is still room in this class for a maximum of twelve. Five consecutive Mondays starting Next Week!

Back-to-Back-to-Back

Wednesday, June 3rd, 2009

After a few weeks of travel I’ve returned to Portland where my work is being featured in three different projects opening this week…..

The Froelick Gallery presents the juried Town & Country: Oregon at 150. They selected 30 artists from 250 applications. My photographs Yellowline and Tabula Rasa are included as are works by Jim Lommasson, Stephen Hayes, Laura Ross-Paul and Craig Hickman among others.

Organizers Mia Nolting and Justin Bland have put together Green Oregon, what looks to be an intelligent survey (perhaps even a counter-point to the above). Held at PNCA’s Manuel Izquierdo Gallery, they’ve included my piece missing|space. Here’s a related story from The Oregonian.

And John Brodie’s Store for A Month opens today as well (w/a reception Friday). He’s included my altered artcards (and a few forthcoming surprises). See the related story in the Oregonian. You can also listen to John w/Eva Lake/KBOO.

Pictures from all three openings on OpenWidePDX (and here).

Town & Country

Sunday, May 17th, 2009

Froelick Gallery honors Oregon’s sesquicentennial by presenting Town & Country: Oregon at 150. This juried exhibit brings together a diverse selection of artists celebrating all aspects of the unique Oregon landscape: the rocky crags of the coast; the fertile farms of the Willamette Valley; bridges of Portland; industrial parks of the Columbia slough and everything in between. The following 30 artists were selected from over 250 applicants:

Chris Bennett, Sana Krusoe, Patricia Bognar, Carson Legree, Eric Bowman, Gabriel Liston, Paul Fardig, Jim Lommasson, Kevin Farrell, TJ Norris, Eric Franklin, Barry Pelzner, Wendy Given, Ben Rosenberg, Stephen Hayes, Laura Ross-Paul, Craig Hickman, Bill Sharp, Alex Hirsch, Mike Southern, Sarah Horowitz, Seth Tane, Liz Holzman, David Lorenz Winston, Mark Hooper, John Wippich, Marilyn Joyce, Christy Wyckoff, Kimberly Kolba, Ron van Dongen
