Miami Day 3: “Art Attack”

I’m gonna spare most of the commentary today, suffice to say that I ran into a woman that asked me if was experiencing an ‘art attack’ while here. I think the answer is probably yes. It’s a bit much, but I’m going to pace it better tomorrow. Today I managed to examine the wares at Photo Miami (two huge tents), Pulse, Gensai and the marvelous Rubell Family Collections. I also purchased a wonderful little book called Little Savages by twenty-something London-based video artist Tessa Farmer who signed this gem for me. She has work in the Saatchi Collection, and her related video work is animated with insects and animals in stop motion. She was also recently selected to participate in the 2008 Tatton Park Biennial.

The art fairs were generously filled with a range of work, many duplicates of same or similar artists, but some surprises, mostly coming from Asia and Latin America, and there were a few hot/cool galleries hailing from France and Germany as well. There were some stunting Richter’s in the haus. In our tour around town we also managed to take in a few local galleries and neighborhoods, and getting over to the Wynwood area is like going to a completely different world, as it’s pretty much industrial aside from some nearby working class neighborhoods. I’m sure this wakes up the streets, and makes the locals curl an eyebrow or two. I enjoyed the racing pedicabs, people watching the many well heeled patrons and trying to find a level of breath in between things as this entire affair is quite large.

The Rubell’s have an amazing set of work by Christian Boltanski, and by Rosemary Trockel and a big and beautiful Kiefer! Excellent taste in video and sculpture, though we differ quite a bit in the field of painting - they like the ‘rough stuff’ (though I do always watch the ever-evolving Marlene Dumas). Their digs are spacious and just so inviting. Their taste ranges, but they are certainly risk takers, style makers. If I return to Miami I couldn’t imagine visiting without stopping here. It’s a small contemporary art museum.

I had words with a few interesting gallerists today, and actually felt oiled enough to pass on my card to a few that seemed reasonably interested. Pulse was a great fair. I enjoyed going inside a large plexi cube surrounded by cameras and spinning for the outside monitors. The outdoor neighborhood postings and graffitti. The tapas and papaya mojito. My interview with Miami Art Exchange went very well today, it was a podcast, so we’ll see it soon. Tomorrow I am meeting up with one of my favorite artists around, AA Bronson who is here representing Printed Matter. Before I digress too much, please enjoy these random photos I shot of daily sightings.
